REFLECTION

4th March 2016

The first parent teacher night was a mess! As i was unexperienced organising parent teacher nights, last night was definitely a challenge. However, I have learnt and recognised areas where I can improve as a leader, and areas where I can improve the efficiency of Parent Teacher Nights. Below is a list of improvements that i created afterwards:

Year 8 Parent Teacher 3rd March:

Improvements/Issues:

  • Tables: Clear department sections

  • Refilling of drinks and food (ran out of cups)

  • Bins provided on the venue

  • Maps for parents

  • Air conditioning

  • Clearer roles for volunteers

  • Students leaving their bags in doorways

  • doorway button

I learnt that team collaboration is extremely important to organise an effective night. This way, I can spread the work load out and also lean on others if i need help. Through working collaboratively , I can utilize other peoples skills and also help others. (LO5) However, i did face some challenges of collaboration: some volunteers aren't contributing and slacking off. Noticed some of the volunteers aren't putting much effort in, or slacking and just eating the food.

There is a big increase of the overall flow and efficiency of each night! Our team has decided to take rotations of being 'in charge'. This method allows us to have breaks and not be under constant stress. We have also solved many of the issues that appeared from our first parent teacher night! However, i recognised that i need to improve my confidence as I am sometimes too shy to command or ask people to do things. I am steadily working on this, and aim to be able to speak loudly without any hesitance.

In attempt to solve the slacking volunteer issue that we experienced from our first parent teacher night session, we have been more rigorous with our selection process. However, sometimes there are not enough volunteers for a specific nights, hence "beggars can't be choosers". From this method, we have found the volunteers to be much more enthusiastic and hard working.

Recently we have been struggling to find enough volunteers to help us throughout the night. The school recently announced that everyone in Year 12 would become a prefect, which was a large motivator for people to volunteer to help us during parent teacher nights. However, we have tried out best to combat this issue and went around individually asking people to come help us.

Overall this was a great experience were i was able to develop my own leadership skills, and gain experience organising large groups and events. I believe that i have gained more confidence during this volunteering, and gained invaluable experience which will aid me in the future. I have also learnt to mitigate strategies or 'make do with what i have' and try to make the outcome the best i can.
