Cross Age Peer Tutoring

REFLECTIONS:
15 April 2016
This is my first time tutoring young kids, i found that i definitely underestimated the patience and skill needed to engage with the pupil. I found difficulties to get my child's attention and engagement in activities. Since we was struggling with the content already, whenever she encountered a problem or something she did not understand she would refuse to attempt it. However, from this experience i learnt the importance of patience and that i shouldn't focus on results but rather the journey of her improvement. (LO1, LO2)

During my time as a peer tutor, sometimes i switched to different students depending on who was present. I found it difficult to talk to students who are not familiar with me, as they are shy and do not want to admit what they are struggling with. I learnt the importance of light encouragement and having a friendly atmosphere. I know now that you should not be too forceful or eager to point out what the child has done wrong with their work or what needs to be improved. Just like team work, it is important to acknowledge each person's efforts and what they have done. Then, if needed, lightly suggest an improvement or something else which can be done. (LO2, LO4, LO5)

To help with my main student Vanessa, who has been struggling to correctly structure essays and to not plagiarise, i have been researching on my own time to find useful resources for her and activities she could do to improve her skills. I realised that initially i was too focused on seeing the results of my student's improvement for my own personal satisfaction, however this is not ethical or moral and now i have shifted my focus onto the growth of the student. (LO3, LO7)

25th November 2016
I learnt the effectiveness of sticking to a routine during lesson times and to have a lesson plan! Initially, we focused on whatever work she brought to our sessions, because of this I did not see any steady improvement and my students usually forgot things which we may have covered weeks previously. Now, we quickly revise over points we have covered before and continue on. I learnt that by doing this, steady improvement is happening with their work quality. (LO2, LO3, LO5)

Reflecting on my time tutoring, i have realised that my patience has improved when dealing with difficulties and lack of effort students may face. I have also created a great friendship with my students, who now feel comfortable admitting whatever areas they may be struggling with and have now become proud to show me their work. I am immensely glad to see that my efforts have made a difference and genuinely hope my students continue to thrive. (LO2, LO5)

29th March 2017
I found that my teaching and logical explanation skills have been improving. Before, whenever i tried to explain something, i would jump from point to point and have no clear logical process, which usually confused my students. I have learnt now to clearly explain something, step by step. This has also helped with my own understanding and learning process, as everything is much clearer and understandable. (LO2)

I learnt the importance of breaks whenever trying to learn or teach someone content. I found that regular breaks allows my brain to continue to work effectively and also lifts my own motivation and work morale. This has also helped with my own studying process. Now that i am in year 12, i usually feel overwhelmed with the amount of work i need to do and work until obscure hours in the morning. However, i have learnt that this is actually counterproductive and would leave me exhausted and in a bad mood. Now, i give my students quick breaks throughout our sessions, having conversations or just some 'down time' as sometimes the work can be overwhelming for her. I also need to consider that she is much younger than i am, hence will have a shorter attention span. (LO1, LO2).

19th of May
My time tutoring has taught my many skills and made me realise faults within my own habits and areas where i need to improve. Overall, i believe that i have developed as a person, learning to be considerate of others when they face difficulties towards areas which i may find easy and simple. I learnt the importance of commitment and strategy, such as sticking to routines and revising constantly. I have learnt the importance of patience, encouragement and reward when helping overs, and the benefits of helping overs and letting others help you. I have also learnt important life-skills to improve my own studying process. In all, this program has been a wonderful experience and i would not hesitate to do it again. (LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4, LO5).
