Fiji Service Trip 2016
For my IB CAS Group project Carma, Claris, Jasmine and I will be undertaking a school wide picture book drive to collect books to donate to children in a rural school in Bail. These books will aid the children in learning english and expand the school's resources.
Originally we were all travelling to Bali in the April 2016 holidays for our Duke of Edinburgh award, however due to safety concerns the school changed the destination to Fiji.

Project

Donating the Picture Books
Duke of ed girls were organising our book drive books into suitable levels for the school library of Nasivikoso Village School

Collection boxes :
We left several collection boxes in different areas throughout the school. Together, we also decided it would be more beneficial if we had members of the group waiting and collecting books at the school gates in the mornings. To make it fair, we took turns arriving to school early. While it was more work, we earnestly wanted this project to be as successful as possible to help the underfunded/underfacilited school which we will be donating to. (LO4, LO6) This way, students at the school will be reminded of our book drive and provide convenience for them (as they don't need to walk to a collection box).
Results of Drive
School Newsletter Section:
I contacted the school's newsletter author to have a section about our book drive in the next newsletter.
Schoology Announcements :
To further spread awareness of the book drive we emailed the Head of Senior School, Mr Scotney. In return, he posted reminders of the book drive on Schoology (our school's online announcement and assessment website).
Group planning::
Group Meeting 10/2/16
First Bali Group meeting, we dicussed the direction of our project.
Another group meeting:
Meeting 25/2/16
We discussed our plans as a group and begun to organise our actions from now on. As some members have conducted a similar fundraiser at school, we drew on their previous knowledge and collaborated together to organise our goals and steps we needed to achieve. (LO3)

Assembly Announcements :
As we were concerned that some students wouldnt read the posters placed around at school, we decided that we should make an announcement during assembly. We were first unsure about who to contact about this, but after asking our CAS teacher we were told to contact Mr Scotney. To make the announcements more efficient, we split into pairs. (Junior, Middle School, Senior School Assembly). Jasmine and I did the announcement at the Middle School Assembly. I felt very nervous during the announcement, as there was so many people! However, I believe that this experience has gained me more confidence (for speaking and presenting in front of crowds) and allowed me to develop more as a speaker. (LO1)
School Posters:

Dymocks Involvement :
Contacted our local Dymocks (Dymocks Burwood) and asked if they would like to donate books to our cause. We wanted to make sure this interaction was successful as possible, and asked the Duke of Edinburgh coordinator, Mr Mole, for some help. We were immensely excited when we recieved some books back!
